Agra is the city in which the Taj Mahal is located. The iconic white mausoleum, built in  1653 by Raj Shahiahan for his wife, is actually a single building in a huge religious center.  It is surrounded by Mosques.   Shahiahan had planned to build "The Black Taj" for himself on the opposite bank of the Yamuna River.  His son imprisoned him for misuse of money.  He was locked away for life in the Red Fort.

On the way to look across the river, we saw the smaller center of Itmad un dualah constructed in 1622.  Clearly this was the model for the Taj Mahal.  The stonework of this tomb is far superior to the Taj.  The mausoleum complex sits also sits on the edge of the Yamuna River.  Most visitors to Agra are unaware of this prototype for the Taj Mahal.   Right: The impressive mausoleum for Akbar built in 1605.
